New Product Development Primer (generated by ChatGPT)

I’ve been experimenting with ChatGPT from OpenAI as content creation tool and last night after a conversation with an entrepreneur, I thought I would dig a bit deeper.

The entrepreneur and I were talking about the fundamentals of new product development and I wondered what ChatGPT would have to say.

So I asked this question:

What is a step-by-step process to develop a successful new product?

It generated - within seconds - a nine step process and I then asked how to complete each of the nine steps.

This coincided with the puck drop of the World Juniors hockey game (Go Canada!) and I generated the content in the first period, formatted it in the second period and wrote an introduction in the third. 

The result is a 14 page document (eBook?) called Nine Steps to Create Successful New Products (as generated by ChatGPT) and can be downloaded here - other than the formatting, I did not edit a thing (so you can blame the model if you spot any errors). 

After reading through the content, the results are basic (very basic; so I’m not too concerned about being replaced by a bot just yet) but also remarkable.  It doesn’t have the depth, nuance or real life experiences offered by my Product Opportunity Mapping framework but as a primer it serves its purpose - and it was completed in less time than it takes to play a game of hockey (in fact the formatting took much longer than the few minutes to generate the content). 

As this is just the beginning for AI generated conversational models, it is mind blowing to think how powerful these tools will become.  For today though, I will leave it those who want to develop a new product to judge if the content has any value.
